We began by honouring the Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) as a finely tuned energetic signature, then danced through the vibrant world of synesthesia where senses intertwine. Now, we turn our attention to a topic that, for many, remains invisible—yet for some, like me, it is a palpable reality: electrosensitivity.
As someone who navigates the world as an HSP, a synesthete, and someone with electrosensitivity—all amplified by a deep empathic field—I’ve come to understand that our unique sensory and energetic experiences are not flaws, but profound gateways to deeper awareness. In this post, we'll explore electrosensitivity—a condition where Every Body responds to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) with distinct physical and energetic sensations.
My hope is that by sharing these insights, others who recognise themselves in these words will know they are not alone, and that their deep perception is a powerful gift waiting to be understood and integrated.
What is Electrosensitivity?
Imagine walking into a room and feeling a subtle hum in your head, a tingling in your skin, or a sudden wave of fatigue—without any obvious cause. For someone with electrosensitivity, or Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS), these are not imagined sensations; they are direct responses to the electromagnetic fields that surround us in our modern world.
Electrosensitivity is a condition where an individual experiences physical symptoms when exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) at levels well below those considered harmful by conventional safety standards. It's not a psychological condition, but a physiological response to an energetic environment.
The different types of EMFs
There are four types of electromagnetic fields. Let's take a look at each of them in detail.
1) ELECTRIC FIELDS
An electric field is an invisible region of force surrounding electrically charged particles or objects, which governs how strongly they attract or repel one another. While voltage creates an electric field (even if the device is turned off), current flow creates the magnetic field (only when the device is turned on and drawing power).
Examples: induction hobs, underfloor heating.
Measurement: Gauss (G) or Tesla (T), or more commonly in everyday environments, milliGauss (mG) and microTesla (µT).

3) RADIO FREQUENCY
Radio Frequency (RF) is the specific portion of the electromagnetic field (EMF) spectrum used for wireless communication. It consists of oscillating electric and magnetic waves that travel through space at the speed of light, typically spanning frequencies from 30 kHz to 300 GHz.
Examples: wifi, mobile phones, cordless phones, blue tooth devices, baby monitors.
Measurement: Hertz (Hz) frequency in cycles per second.

4) DIRTY ELECTRICITY
Dirty electricity (also known as transient voltage, high-frequency noise, electrical noise or electromagnetic interference) refers to unwanted erratic, high-frequency voltage spikes, surges, and harmonic distortions traveling along standard building wiring. Instead of a smooth 50/60-Hertz (Hz) sine wave, this "polluted" power creates radiating electromagnetic fields (EMF) that extend outward from the wires.
It is primarily a byproduct of modern, energy-efficient electronics that continually chop and manipulate electrical current. This noise can then radiate into your living space, affecting sensitive bodies.
What makes dirty electricity particularly challenging is that it can travel into your home from outside your property. Nearby businesses, power lines, or even your neighbours' electronics can contribute to the dirty electricity levels in your home, making it harder to fully eliminate.
Examples: LED lights, dimmer switches, solar inverters, heat pump inverters, computers, phone chargers, washing machines, refrigerators, smart meters and electric cars.
Measurement:
Dirty electricity is generally measured in two specific ways:
Millivolts (mV or mVpp): Standard Line Noise EMI Meters measure high-frequency electromagnetic interference in millivolts, representing the peak-to-peak voltage of the noise.
Graham-Stetzer Units (GS units): Some meters (like the Stetzerizer) convert frequency and voltage into GS units.

Symptoms of EMF exposure:
For most people, these fields are imperceptible. But for the electrosensitive, they can trigger a range of symptoms, including:
Neurological: Headaches, dizziness, brain fog, memory issues, tingling, numbness.
Dermatological: Skin rashes, burning, itching, facial flushing.
Cardiovascular: Heart palpitations, chest pain.
Musculoskeletal: Muscle aches, joint pain.

It's estimated that between 3% and 10% of the population experiences some degree of electrosensitivity, though numbers vary widely depending on the study and diagnostic criteria. It's often a progressive condition, meaning symptoms can worsen with continued exposure or over time.

The connection between sensitivity to artificial fragrances and Electromagnetic Field (EMF) exposure lies within a broader medical framework known as Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance (IEI). While a primary sensitivity to artificial fragrance is heavily documented as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), and sensitivity to EMFs is known as Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS), research shows that these two conditions frequently overlap. An estimated 30% of individuals who report high sensitivity to EMFs also suffer from MCS.

For those who don't experience it, electrosensitivity can be hard to imagine. But for someone like me, it's a constant energetic dialogue with the environment—a subtle hum, a sudden wave, a pressure on the skin or behind the eyes.
Here are common descriptions of what electrosensitivity can feel like:
Head Pressure or Hum: A feeling of tightness, buzzing, or a low-frequency hum in the head, especially near Wi-Fi routers, cell towers, or smart meters.
Tingling, Numbness or Burning Skin: A sensation of pins and needles, warmth, or a subtle burning or numbness on the face, hands, or other exposed areas, often near devices like laptops, phones or wifis. Sometimes the tingling, numbness and burning can happen simultaneously.
Fatigue and Brain Fog: A sudden, unexplained exhaustion, difficulty concentrating, or a feeling of mental cloudiness when exposed to strong EMF sources.
Heart Palpitations: An irregular heartbeat or a feeling of fluttering in the chest, particularly in high-EMF environments.
Anxiety or Irritability: A heightened sense of unease, nervousness, or emotional dysregulation that seems to arise without clear cause, often in places with many wireless devices.
Sleep Disturbances: Difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking, or unrefreshing sleep, especially when sleeping near electronics or in high-EMF areas.
Muscle Aches or Joint Pain: Unexplained stiffness or discomfort, sometimes localized to areas near EMF sources.
